SKET's market position goes from strength to strength - new large order from Bridon International Ltd.

In recent months SKET Verseilmaschinenbau GmbH has further consolidated its leading position as a supplier of machinery and equipment for the manufacture of cable and wire rope.

Bridon International Ltd. has entrusted the company with the manufacture and supply of stranding machinery for the production of "High-Performance-Ropes" having a total value in excess of 11 million Euros. This new equipment will be installed next year at Bridon's new site in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

There is already a long standing relationship between the two companies stretching back for over a decade when SKET delivered a tubular stranding machine type SRW 1+45x660 to Bridon in Willington Quay in the year 2000. An SRW 1+26x610 from the same machine range followed in 2004. Also in2004, a forty bobbin tubular stranding machine type SRW 40x22" was supplied to Bridon’s factory in the USA.

In 2007, Bridon in Gelsenkirchen in Germany took delivery of what was at the time the largest take-up in the world, having a capacity of 370 tonnes, as well as two 200 tonne take-ups.

In addition to supplying Bridon with these new machines, SKET has further supplied various separate machine assemblies and has renovated and upgraded a number of existing machines.

The quality of the SKET machines supplied and confidence in the company with its committed workforce, its capacity and unmatched experience, were ultimately the factors which persuaded Bridon to place a new order in favour of SKET. In recent times, SKET has also successfully completed or is currently working on similar large orders for machinery for the manufacture of electric cable and wire rope.

Planning related to this new equipment involved close collaboration between the two contracting companies. All design details related to the most important machine assemblies were agreed in advance before they were put into production. In this way it was possible to take all of the customer’s specific requirements into account along with all technical matters related to the future operation of the machines. As the manufacture of the order progresses, Bridon will carry out related audits on site in Magdeburg and on the premises of selected sub-contractors.

Bridon's order covers the supply of:

  • A tubular stranding machine type SRW 680 having a bobbin diameter of 680mm for the manufacture of steel wire strand above 40mm.
    and
  • A tandem cage stranding machine type MKVS having an advanced configuration for the closing of steel wire ropes having a diameter of up to 250mm. The strand capacities of the pay-off bobbins are up to 38 tonnes each. The maximum weight of rope produced will be in excess of 600 tonnes.
The attached picture shows a closing cage type MKVS 8x2700 and were taken in SKET's works during final assembly.

Trendsetter in energy revolution

There is no alternative to a major extension to the electricity supply grid if plans for the adoption of renewable energy sources are to be realized, an aim shared by politicians and industrialists alike. The challenges thrown down to, amongst others, the cable and steel wire rope industries, are enormous.

SKET has always been one of the leading manufacturers of machinery and equipment for the production of cable and steel wire rope. Of particular importance are drum twisters for the cable industry and long tubular stranding machines and large cage type stranding machines for the manufacture of offshore ropes.

Whilst cage and tubular stranding machines have been associated with the reputation and traditions of the Magdeburg stranding machine manufacturer since the beginning of the 20th Century, drum twisters, also known in the German speaking world as universal stranding machines, have only been designed, built and delivered over the last fifty years. Mainly used for the production of energy and telephone cables, for the screening of medium and high voltage cables, for the armouring of energy cables with round or flat steel wires and for the manufacture of Milliken conductors for high voltage and super high voltage cables and for the manufacture of offshore energy cables, these machines are essential for the above referred to extension of the grid.

In line with the traditions of the Magdeburg stranding machine manufacturer and its professional approach to business, each machine is customized to the product specific requirements of the user. Right from the project planning stage the particular needs of the customer are examined and evaluated and a proposal specific to these requirements is worked out and, in cooperation with the user, optimized and implemented. The result of this is invariably a tailor-made machine design which meets the technical, technological and economic demands placed on it.

Pay-off and take-up reel dimensions of up to 5,000 mm and weights of over 50 tonnes are not only possible but already successfully in use.
In this way SKET Verseilmaschinenbau GmbH strives continually to meet the demand for ever longer production lengths and is developing its drum twisters to meet the specific needs of manufacturers of offshore energy cables.

This trend continues the demand for long, heavy duty steel wire ropes for offshore and mining applications and inevitably faces suppliers to the steel wire industry with new challenges.
When SKET supplied the first tubular stranding machine having 48 bobbins with a flange diameter of 630 mm in 1998, the assumption was that this was a one-off business requirement. Since then, however, a whole range of machines having more than 40 bobbins with diameters of 560 or 630 mm have been supplied. A further machine type SRW 1+48x630 was delivered this year. Currently in production and a candidate for the Guinness Book of Records is a tubular stranding machine type SRW 1+48x800. With a length of over 122 m, this machine is the largest machine of its type in the world to date.

In the cage type stranding machine sector too, the demand for ever bigger machines remains unbroken. In addition to machines type MKVS 8x2030 and MKVS 8x2700 already supplied or currently in production, the construction of a further large tandem cage type stranding machine is currently in the planning stage.
Whereas production weights of 160 tonnes represented an absolute peak twenty-five years ago, today coil weights of rope of up to 400 tonnes are regarded as standard. Newly qualified as top of the class are recently supplied pay-offs and take-ups with a capacity of 600 tonnes.

In the race for bigger and better, SKET is not only seriously involved but has its nose well and truly in front!

SKET Starts Into 2011 With Its Order Books Well Filled

Having dispatched the last orders of the year 2010 in late December, our company has now started moving full steam ahead on this year's orders.

As a result of intensive market cultivation within the past few months, incoming orders amounted to more than EUR 8 million yet in December 2010. This figure includes, amongst others, 24 double twist bunchers and seven high-speed tubular stranders for producing steel wire strands and steel wire ropes as well as a 91bobbin rigid strander for making cables, to be delivered to customers in Europe and Asia.
At present, stranding machines that are, for the time being, the world's largest stranders for making steel ropes, are manufactured for a Korean customer within the framework of the "Neptune 2" project.

The scope of delivery comprises:
  • a Model SRW 48x800 Tubular Strander for stranding a maximum of 48 steel wires into steel wire strands, with a machine length of more than 122 m,
